We heard about change for two years…
Change is to become different. Yet we see the same old things in Washington – windy speeches, political maneuvering, finger-pointing, familiar faces in powerful unelected positions, assumption of public ignorance.
Hope is to rely on something beyond your control to bring about a positive outcome. This positive outcome needs to be desirable… like change for the better. But when you look to someone for positive change, and receive nothing of the sort (more of the same), you are granted false hope, right?
Full disclosure: I did not vote for Obama. My premise was that in order to be CEO of the largest business in the world, you needed to show a stable track record, so that I could judge your decisions, and whether I should support you. Being President of United States will be Obama’s longest full-time job he has had while not striving for another. So unfortunately, all he had to offer (in my view anyway) was conjecture… words. Not something that excites me when wielding that much power.
The image of a snake oil salesman came to mind — Selling the miracle cure for all of your horrible ills… luring you into thinking the world will come to an end… BUT if you take some of this magic elixir, you’ll be cured.
Obama tells me that we’re in crisis-mode, and that he’s got the answer. Send me some snake oil. He says he’s going to not only break the recession by spending our way out, but he’s going to cut the deficit in half while doing it. I’ll have a 12-pack please. He tells me he’s going to cut taxes for 95% of working families, while raising the taxes for the other 5% to shoulder the burden (that means the families already in the highest percentage tax bracket, will have to pay even higher percent). Does he have kegs?
So I read this quote the other day by I’m not sure who: “If you rob Peter to pay Paul, you can always depend on the support of Paul”. I figure this is genius. Get 95% of the population on your side to take from the other 5%, and why not? They’ll support you, it isn’t costing THEM. Yet, somehow many view the 5% as the greedy and selfish ones. Ironic, huh?
Full disclosure: I’m one of those 5%. But even though the plan is to stick it to me and my kind because I work ridiculous hours and take risks to earn and get way ahead, I won’t slow down. I won’t stop working in the community and helping others. I’ll just sleep less. 5 hours should do. That way I can work one more hour a day to make up for the increased taxation in this down market.
Then I get the epiphany… snake oil = Vaseline©. I’ve finally got it! He’s selling Vaseline©! I’m going to need it!
