I can’t say that I have always DISagreed with Bill Maher, but more often than not, I have found him to be way off-base, and too radical to be capable of a reliable opinion. But I did agree with Maher in his belief that America is a “stupid country”.
I’m not calling all Americans stupid, I’m not even calling most of them stupid, but it’s more like when you see someone do something stupid, you refer to them as a stupid person based on the one inept action you’ve seen. What I’ve seen is American’s as a majority be stupid voters.
Think for a minute. If you knew someone who thought almost always about themselves, lied regularly, and promised to accomplish things you relied on them to do, yet not only never did these things, but also came up with bogus excuses for them – would you continue to associate with them? I’m guess the smart people say “no”. Yet, if you take these smart people, and go back to their voting record of people they have voted for that either were guilty of the above-mentioned scenario, or promised far more than could pass the laugh test, I think you’d find an overwhelming majority of people have voted for these same buffoons that they never would have associated with.
Why? Because America as a country has become more interested in the sound bite, the quick comment, the abbreviated version, the flash, the glamour, the hype, and often cast out the explanation, the reason, the substance, the validity, the honor. In this, yes, America is a “stupid country”.
I’ll give you an example: Look who was elected president – a very intelligent and eloquent man. Yet, also a man that when he speaks unscripted, and without a teleprompter often sends shivers down people’s spine. This is a person that voted “present” more than any other during his terms as state legislator, not as his spin masters claim because of disagreements for the bill, but so when he held higher office, no one could point fingers at him for being for or against anything. This is a person that got elected to the senate, was interviewed immediately after the win and asked if he would run for president – his response being “no” and that he would have to begin campaigning right away. He did just that. I could go on, but this article is not about bashing Obama, it’s about the lazy thought process of the overwhelming majority of Americans.
So, as long as We The Sheeple continue to perpetuate these egotistical bumbling ideologues, we are in fact, as Bill Maher states, a “stupid country”

[...] again, I have to agree with Bill Mahr (though he’s ann @$$ in most other areas) that Americans may just be as dumb [...]
You do some great points. I would like add that I think part of the problem is that we are distracted. As a whole, the nation has a case of ADD or maybe ADHD. We see all of these sparkly baubles such as American Idol, Michael Jackson, top movie of the week, and so on, and so on. Our attention is not on what is important. What’s the news? To many, it is the time when the idiot box is turned off.
